With 700 million weekly users asking context-rich/purchase intent questions, you are looking at a substantial opportunity. On top of the size of the opportunity, the level of trust and engagement could potentially supercharge these offerings, as most people perceive AI-generated answers as a credible and trustworthy source.
This represents the first major AI platform to monetize through advertising, and Microsoft Advertising research shows conversational AI ads already deliver 73% higher click-through rates than traditional search. The floodgates are opening, so what now?
What can your organization do today?
There are a lot of advancements in this space right now, and if you are excited and overwhelmed at the same time and don’t know where to start, you are not alone. Don’t worry, you don’t need to do everything at once. Start with small, manageable steps and bring in digital marketing help where you can.
- Secure pilot access. If you are operating in the US, getting ChatGPT pilot program access should be on your radar immediately. Early access equals early learning. Talk to your agency or in-house team about it today.
- Audit your AI brand presence. How does your brand appear across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity? What’s your share of voice when users ask questions related to your product category? If you don’t know, find out. This will inform your participation timeline, budget, and platform spend allocation.
- Rethink your creative approach. Conversational ads require different messaging than banner ads or search listings. Focus on solutions to specific problems rather than broad brand awareness. Test whether helpful, discovery-focused recommendations outperform traditional promotional tactics like discounts. The conversational format rewards brands that provide genuine value at the moment of need. Create some sample ads with your team; it’s a good team exercise.
- Allocate experimentation budget. Consider dedicating 10% of your PPC budget specifically for AI advertising tests. This creates room to learn without cannibalizing proven channels.
- Build tracking mechanisms now. Don’t wait for perfect attribution solutions. Create whatever tracking you can implement immediately, even if it’s manual and directional. Track referral traffic from different AI platforms, monitor AI share of voice, and build these metrics into standard reporting dashboards.
- Prepare for attribution challenges. Talk to your analytics team or your digital agency early. Set realistic expectations: you won’t get granular attribution like other channels from day one. Accept directional data and qualitative signals as valuable inputs and find someone who can interpret them intelligibly!
- Establish agile decision-making frameworks. This space will evolve rapidly. New ad formats will launch. Additional platforms will introduce advertising. Organizations that can respond without bureaucratic friction or budget paralysis will find their groove faster.
